Poor orphan, Isomee Hogg-Bottom, lives with her uncle who treats her like a slave. But one day, Brackenbelly arrives at Hogg-Bottom farm to buy a chostri - an enormous bird large enough to ride!

Isomee and Brackenbelly become friends and soon find themselves thrown into the middle of a dangerous mystery - something is trying to eat the giant birds in the darkness of night.
